Next Sunday 17th September, Kinetic Six will once again be running the Worcester 10k in aid of the Worcestershire Association of Carers. To celebrate this event coinciding with WAC’s 20th birthday, we thought we’d take the opportunity to tell you a bit more about this incredible charity and the amazing work it does in support of carers in Worcestershire.
The role of the unpaid carer is a much undervalued and under-discussed one. Statistically, at least 3 out of 5 of us will become unpaid carers for a loved one at some point in our lives, and it can be an incredible challenge both financially and mentally. Many carers go without the support they need, having to fit their care around their existing responsibilities and commitments, which can have a detrimental effect on themselves and the person they are caring for.
In Worcestershire alone, there are 63,000 recorded unpaid carers, and that number is set to rise. Unpaid personal care saves the NHS around £132 billion a year, enough to fund a second NHS, and this wouldn’t be possible without the support from organisations like the Worcester Association of Carers.
WAC is a registered charity that was founded in 1997 providing an independent source of information, advice and support for unpaid adult carers in Worcestershire. Their mission is to provide representation for carers at a local and national level and give them voice in decisions that affect them, empowering them to make informed choices that positively influence their lives.
The Worcester 10k is an annual race that takes place throughout the beautiful city of Worcester. 2017 marks the race’s 4th birthday and the 20th birthday of WAC! This year, the charity are aiming to raise £8,500 at the event, to bring their total funds raised from the Worcester 10k since 2014 up to £20,000. With only two weeks to go, the WAC are still on the lookout for runners, so if you think you have what it takes to get involved, head to the Worcester City 10k website and sign up here.
The lovely Lizzie Smith, fundraising officer at WAC, told this story from her memorable first meeting with Shaun:
“Kinetic Six’s history with WAC started in 2015, in a field in Kempsey, Worcestershire, where I met Shaun and Bri’ann his beautiful English Bull Terrier, about to run. Well, Shaun was, Bri’ann had a different idea and bless him Shaun changed his plan and listened to me bang on about carers and our need to find 63 runners for upcoming race; 1 runner to represent each 1,000 adult unpaid carers we have in Worcestershire. Before you could say “you want me to do what?!” Shaun had got four of his Kinetic Six staff – himself included – signed up for the 2015 team.
Anything to do with Kinetic Six makes us smile here at WAC. In 2015 they even did the Great Gorilla Run in London the day before the Worcester 10k and still finished smiling. This year they come back as corporate supporters – joining Seagull Balustrades, Southco and Firelabel Merchandising – and they are fielding a team of 7, including Iron Man Tom Lowe.
We are all looking forward to seeing them again. It’s going to be good fun and good fundraising for sure!”
Kinetic Six are proud to be an official sponsor for WAC, and to be running on their behalf in the Worcester 10k.
